Four steps, and the first one is not a card form.
Signing up is the same in both products until the third step, where they part ways because in Vault there is a half the server cannot do.
1 · You sign in with your identity
Today with your Google account, through the Musubi identity provider. Authenticating is not having access: the provider says who you are, not what you may do. Signing up with a password and an invitation is partly built and not enabled yet.
2 · You create the organization
A display name and a short identifier. The identifier shows up in the address and never changes: changing it would break every shared link and every bookmark, and the creation screen says so right there, which is the only moment when the choice can be made well.
3 · You reach the first thing that is useful
In Vault your vault is finished in the browser: the organization key is generated on your device and wrapped for you, because the server cannot hold it. If you close the tab halfway, the organization is marked incomplete and you can finish it or discard it — what you will not get is an organization that looks normal and does not open.
In OnCall you copy the ingestion credential into your Alertmanager or your CloudWatch and fire a test alert. When it rings on your phone the product is doing its job; until that moment nothing you configured counts.
4 · You invite your team
An organization grows by invitation, never because somebody guessed its identifier. Whoever invites picks the role, and the role can be changed and taken away later.
What you need at hand.
- A Google account. It is the only way in that is enabled today.
- For OnCall, an Alertmanager or a CloudWatch already producing alerts. With no source connected there is nothing to look at.
- For Vault, a browser and nothing else. The Android app and the extension come later and are not needed to start.
If you sign in and see nothing.
An identity that belongs to no organization is neither an error nor a denied permission: it is the state of someone who has not created or been invited to one yet. The screen offers to create one or to wait for an invitation, and tells you which identity you are waiting with — the most common confusion is having signed in with the wrong Google account.
